Urlife T2 Ebike: Police Stop and Eerie Night Rides in Wales

The Urlife T2 is a 20" fat tyre ebike, and we've been putting ours through some very different tests lately. One was a stop by the police. The other two were night rides along the cycle paths of the South Wales valleys, in the dark, with nothing but our bike lights and synth soundtracks.

Urlife T2 Ebike: Police Stop
Fat tyre ebikes get noticed, and sometimes that means getting stopped.
The reason we're not worried about it is that the Urlife T2 we ride is set up as a UK legal ebike (an EAPC, or electrically assisted pedal cycle). To be legal on UK roads and cycle paths, an ebike needs to meet these rules:
A motor with a maximum continuous power of 250W
Motor assistance that cuts out at 15.5mph (25km/h)
Assistance that works while you pedal, apart from an optional walk-assist mode up to 4mph
A rider aged 14 or over
Meet those and you don't need a licence, tax or insurance. Modify the bike to go beyond them and it's no longer classed as an ebike, and the rules change. Always check your own bike's specs and don't assume any bike is legal as sold.

What's it really like to ride an ebike in the dark? For this ride we started at Parc Cwm Darran, passed through Bargoed and carried on to Blackwood. Most of it follows the Nant Bargoed Rhymni Trail, part of the National Cycle Network.
Once the light goes, the nature trail feels completely different. It's quiet and still, and every sound seems louder.

For the second ride we took two 250W Urlife T2s back to Parc Cwm Darran after dark. Fat tyres make a real difference here.
The bikes feel planted on the trail, and the pedal assist takes the effort out of the climbs so you can enjoy the atmosphere.

Tips for riding an ebike at night
Use good lights. Run a bright white front light and a red rear light, and keep your reflectors fitted. On roads at night, lights and a rear reflector are a legal requirement.
Slow down on unlit trails. Your lights only show a short distance ahead.
Ride with someone. It's safer and more fun, and the track name says it all: never ride alone.
Charge before you go. Cold, dark rides can drain a battery faster than you expect.
Tell someone your route. Especially on quiet nature trails with patchy signal.
