Here's the collector hook buried in this game's history: Oni was the last game Bungie made before Halo. Released in early 2001, just months before Halo: Combat Evolved launched with the Xbox and changed everything, Oni is a glimpse at a very different Bungie one making third-person action games with heavy anime influence, published by Rockstar Games, set in a dystopian 2032.

You play as Konoko Katana Oni an agent of the TCTF (Technology Crimes Task Force) thrown into a conspiracy that cuts closer to her own identity than she initially realises. The combat blends hand-to-hand brawling with gunplay in a way few games of the era attempted: you can't carry weapons and punch simultaneously, so fights become fluid decisions between keeping a gun and staying mobile or dropping it for close-quarters. It plays more like an action thriller than a shooter something between Ghost in the Shell and a Luc Besson film, which was entirely intentional.

The game has a devoted cult following precisely because of what it was trying to do the AI was ambitious for 2001, the story is more layered than the exterior suggests, and the combat system holds up better than most contemporary games. It was critically mixed on release, partly because it shipped before it was quite finished, but time has been kind to it.

As a piece of Bungie history alone it's a genuinely interesting artefact the team that made this would ship Halo eight months later.
