Red Faction PS2 | PlayStation 2 | THQ | Volition | 2001 | First-Person Shooter | Geo-Mod | Destructi
Confirmed working tested before listing. Platinum edition. Complete with manual.
Red Faction arrived on PS2 in 2001 with a technology demo that nobody had seen before on a console: Geo-Mod, a real-time geometry deformation engine that let you blast holes through walls, collapse tunnels, create new pathways through solid rock, and fundamentally reshape the environment as you played. You weren't just shooting enemies you were reshaping the level itself.
The premise sets you on Mars in 2075, where you're Parker, a miner working for the oppressive Ultor Corporation. When a plague breaks out and Ultor's response is to lock down the mines and execute workers, Parker joins the Red Faction rebellion and fights his way through the colony's tunnels, research facilities and military complexes. The story is straightforward sci-fi rebellion think Total Recall with a grittier tone but the Geo-Mod engine gives every corridor and firefight a texture you didn't get from other shooters of the era.
In practice this means you can tunnel around a locked door, collapse the ceiling on a group of enemies, or blast through the wall when an ambush goes wrong. The game doesn't always reward creative destruction (some walls are indestructible for technical reasons) but when it works it's genuinely satisfying in a way that most PS2 shooters simply weren't.
Volition went on to make Saints Row and the Red Faction: Guerrilla sequel, which expanded the Geo-Mod concept into a full open-world demolition sandbox. This is where that lineage starts.
