The best entry in the TimeSplitters series, and the final game from Free Radical Design before the studio's collapse made by the core team that created GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark at Rare. If you loved the feel of those games, Future Perfect is where that lineage ends: the same loose, arcade-sharp gunplay, the same irreverent humour, and the same obsessive commitment to split-screen multiplayer as the main event.

The campaign takes Sergeant Cortez across five time periods a 1914 Scottish castle, a 1960s zombie-filled mansion, a 1990s Siberian dam, a near-future military complex, and a war-torn 2243 each with its own visual tone and enemy set. The time travel mechanic is played for comedy as much as plot, with Cortez regularly meeting past and future versions of himself mid-mission. It's knowingly silly and entirely self-aware, and it works beautifully.

What makes Future Perfect exceptional is the breadth of content outside the story. The local multiplayer suite is enormous: over 150 playable characters (including monkeys, robots, zombies, and a disturbingly large number of clowns), 11 game modes, dozens of maps, and split-screen for up to four players. The MapMaker tool lets you build your own levels from scratch and was remarkably fully-featured for a console game of its era. The entire story mode can also be played in two-player co-op a rare feature that adds significant replay value.

This is the copy you buy if you want the definitive couch multiplayer shooter of the PS2 era, or if you never got to play it first time and want to understand why it still has such a devoted following twenty years on.
