Where it all begins:
Manji is a ronin warrior cursed with immortality. Kept alive by sacred bloodworms that heal any wound no matter how severe, he cannot die until he has slain one thousand evil men. It is the price of his redemption and it may take a lifetime. When he meets Rin, a sixteen-year-old girl whose parents were murdered by the ruthless leader of the Itto-ryu sword school, their fates become bound together. Rin wants revenge. Manji needs kills. It should be simple. It never is.
Hiroaki Samura's debut volume wastes no time establishing what makes this series unlike anything else in manga. The artwork is extraordinary pencil and ink work of a density and expressiveness that sits closer to fine art illustration than conventional manga. The characters are morally complex from the very first page. And the world of feudal Japan Samura creates feels genuinely dangerous and alive. This is not just a strong opening volume it is the start of a masterwork.
